3 Quickfire Subject Line Tips For Getting Your Emails Opened
1. Frontloading
Here’s a subject line mistake I see way too often:
Putting the most important part at the end.
The problem?
You’re competing for your reader’s attention and need to make an impact within the first few words.
The end is often cut off in inbox previews when a subject line is long.
“Frontloading” is when you put the core of your subject line at the start.
The core being the key benefit of your email.
Example Subject Lines:

3 tips for getting people to ope…
It’s too long and the core benefit gets cut off in the inbox preview.
Readers aren’t going to bother opening the email to find out what it’s about.
Better:
âś… Get any email opened (3 tips)
The key benefit is at the start.
It’s concise, punchy, and won’t get cut off.
2. Testimonials
Using a quick testimonial as a subject line can work wonders.
As soon as you put a set of words in quotation marks, it immediately sparks curiosity.
Readers wonder who said the words and what they’re talking about.
So they click to open the email and find out.
It plays on social proof - we’re naturally drawn to things that have already been validated by others.
Readers also don’t want to feel as though they’re getting left behind (FOMO).
Example Subject Lines:
“This cheat sheet 2x’d my close rate”
“It saves me 6hrs/week”
The key is to find a testimonial that’s short and punchy enough to use as a subject line.
You can always just use a snippet of a longer testimonial.
3. Exclusivity
We all love feeling like we’re part of an exclusive group.
Exclusive secrets
VIP offers
Insider tips
If you can add even a hint of exclusivity to a subject line, you should.
Examples:
Michelin chef’s 5 baking tips
Your offer is reserved
The first subject line promises insider tips - knowledge that’s not easily accessible or available to just anyone.
The second subject line makes you feel as though there’s something special being held just for you.
Simple, but very effective.
