How To Use Personas In ChatGPT Prompts
Giving ChatGPT a persona is a simple way to make a prompt more effective.
Why?
Here are two different reasons:
Consistency - A persona provides a framework for ChatGPT to follow. This leads to responses that are more consistent over the course of a chat.
Context - Personas also give ChatGPT a better understanding of the context. Eg. if you give ChatGPT the persona of an experienced copywriter, it’ll be more likely to use the appropriate marketing jargon.
But to get the best responses, it’s important to assign personas the right way.
Simply doing so for the sake of it rarely ever leads to an improvement in the responses.
Follow these tips whenever you assign ChatGPT a persona:
1. Be Specific
The more specific you are about the persona, the better ChatGPT can tailor its responses. Details about the persona's background, profession, interests, and personality traits can help.
2. Define The Scope
Clearly outline what kind of knowledge and skills the persona has. For example, if you assign the persona of a copywriter, specify the type of copywriter.
3. Define Your Role
Consider using a role-playing approach.
For example, after you’ve given ChatGPT the persona of a copywriter, clearly state who this copywriter is communicating with.
After all, a copywriter’s responses are going to be different depending on who they’re talking to.
Example 🤖
OK, we might as well really lean into this copywriter example.
As you can see, the example clearly defines the persona, the scope, and exactly who the copywriter is working with.
"You are an experienced copywriter specializing in creating engaging and persuasive Facebook ads.
Your client is a company called 'GreenThumb Gardens', which sells premium, easy-to-grow indoor plant kits.
Their target audience consists of urban dwellers, aged 25-45, who are looking for ways to bring nature into their small living spaces but don't have much experience with gardening.
Please create three examples of compelling ad copy that highlights the ease of use, the joy of gardening, and the aesthetic appeal of having lush green plants at home.
The copy will be used to drive traffic to a landing page with a CTA of buying a starter plant kit with a 50% discount.
Try it out for yourself.
The next time you prompt ChatGPT, include a persona.
The difference in quality and consistency should definitely be noticeable.
