ChatGPT Prompt: “The Quick Fix”

I’m not going to lie.

There are times when I just don’t have time to endlessly tinker with a sentence or paragraph that just doesn’t look right.

Ultimately, I have a writing schedule and I want to stick to it.

I use AI to speed up the process in these circumstances. The beauty of it is that it teaches me how to write with clarity in the process.

There are AI-powered tools like Grammarly Premium that do a good job of this.

But sometimes, I use ChatGPT when I need a quick fix.

Here’s the ChatGPT prompt template I use when a sentence or paragraph just doesn’t read well and I can’t figure out why.

Fill in the blanks you feel would be most relevant. Then, copy, paste, and review the response.

“Hi, ChatGPT. Please improve the clarity and flow of the [sentence/paragraph] I’m going to give you. Use the additional parameters to help you come up with a revised version of the [sentence/paragraph]:

Original sentence/paragraph: [insert]

Specific issues with the sentence (optional): [e.g., grammar, word choice, passive voice, etc.]

Desired output: [Alternative phrasing of the sentence/paragraph]

Desired level of formality (optional): [e.g., casual, formal, academic, etc.]

Context of the sentence (optional): [insert brief context or background information, if necessary]”

Here’s an example of this prompt template in use.

As you can see, I didn’t use all of the parameters because I didn’t think they were all relevant here.

“Hi, ChatGPT. Please improve the clarity and flow of the [sentence] I’m going to give you. Use the additional parameters to help you come up with a revised version of the [sentence]:

Original sentence: [“Not only did she often wear a frumpy red dress, but she also wore a floppy yellow hat that made her impossible to miss in a crowd.”]

Specific issues with the sentence: [poor clarity]

Desired output: [Alternative phrasing of the sentence]

Context of the sentence (optional): [a coming-of-age fiction book]”

And here’s the revised sentence, courtesy of ChatGPT 🤖.

“She was hard to miss in a crowd, often wearing a frumpy red dress and a floppy yellow hat.”

You may need to ask for a few variations before you get the perfect one.

Try it out!

Enjoy.
