ChatGPT Prompt: Learn From Your Heroes

Patchwork.

That’s all a writer’s “style” actually is.

Just a tapestry of pieced-together styles they come across and consciously or subconsciously mimic.

The sooner I came to realize that, the more I sought to emulate my favorite writers without the fear of being labeled “unoriginal”.

In many ways, building your own patchwork writing style is originality.

The more nuanced and intricate the patchwork, the more “original” you’ll become.

When I encounter a passage of writing that captivates me, I want to learn why it does.

The sooner I figure it out, the sooner I can integrate it into my patchwork.

So, I created a ChatGPT prompt to generate detailed analyses of passages of writing I find effective.

It’s like having a literary professor in my back pocket.

Try out the prompt template below. Fill in the blanks you feel would be most relevant.

Then, copy and paste it into ChatGPT.

The Prompt Template 🤖:

“Hi ChatGPT. Please give me a literary analysis of the following passage of writing. I’m a writer and I want to learn why it's so effective. Please use the following information to help you generate the analysis:

Passage of writing:

[copy and paste]

Author: [insert]
Original work: [insert]
Publication year (optional): [insert]
Specific aspects to focus on (optional): [e.g., literary techniques, imagery, structure, tone, mood, diction, characterization, themes]”

Example 💻️ :

I asked ChatGPT to give me an analysis of a short passage from The Song Of Achilles by Madeline Miller.

The downside of cherry-picking a random passage of writing is that you’re providing minimal context.

While it’s likely that ChatGPT will recognize the writing and produce a competent breakdown, feel free to provide additional context if you wish to.

Zoom in if you have to.
