-CONTENT EDITING-

HEMINGWAY

“Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple”.

Woody Guthrie

Hemingway is a free tool with a single purpose:

To “make your writing “bold and clear”.

Its enemy?

Wordy, fluffy, and complex sentence structure.

FunFact:

Most NYT bestsellers from 1960 to 2014 fall somewhere in the seventh-grade reading level spread.

As creators, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to impress our audience.

Blog posts and video scripts with jargon and long, winding sentences.

In reality, writing is getting simpler and simpler.

If you want to hold your audience’s attention, keep it simple.

I often paste my articles, posts, and scripts into Hemingway and end up cutting around 20% of the content.

Fluff that has no real impact on the reader.

Here’s how to use Hemingway to write with extreme clarity:

Quickstart Guide 👇️

1. Go to hemingwayapp.com and read the placeholder text.

It’ll give you a concise explanation of how the tool works.

2. Replace the placeholder text with your own content

It could be a blog post, an article, a video script, or anything else.

Paste it into the tool.

Hemingway will highlight the difficult phrases and complex words.

It’ll often suggest alternative, simpler words as well.

3. Make the suggested changes and assess the readability level

I inserted the text from this newsletter into Hemingway.

It got a Grade 5 readability level and a “Good” rating from Hemingway.

A few years ago I would have been insulted by someone saying I wrote like a 5th-grader.

Now?

I take it as a high-level compliment.

-CHATGPT PROMPT OF THE DAY-

INSTAGRAM CAPTIONS PROMPT

Find yourself writing the same captions for your social media images over and over again?

Most creators don’t find caption creation the most stimulating of tasks.

But it’s no secret that an effective caption can lead to more engagement.

Here’s a ChatGPT prompt that takes the description of your image and creates an impactful caption for it.

In general, the more detailed you can be with your inputs, the better the responses.

Fill in the blanks. Then, copy and paste the prompt into ChatGPT.

As a social media specialist, your task is to generate five engaging Instagram captions for my post. The captions should resonate with my audience and enhance the appeal of the images.

Image Description: [eg. a sun setting over the beach, a bustling city scene, a plate of homemade cookies]

Post Theme or Message: [eg. relaxation, urban life, home baking]

Desired Tone or Style: [eg. inspirational, humorous, informative]

Target Audience: [eg. travel enthusiasts, city dwellers, food lovers]

Call to Action: [eg. ask for likes/comments, encourage followers to tag a friend, direct followers to a link in bio]
